Diminished Value

Does My Car Lose Value After an Accident in Indiana? (Yes — Here's How to Recover It)

January 2025·Tony Fuller Sr.·4 min read

You got rear-ended. The other driver was at fault. The shop did excellent work — you can't even tell it was hit. So why is your car worth $4,000 less than it was the day before the accident?

The answer is inherent diminished value, and it's one of the most overlooked — and most recoverable — losses in any collision claim.

What Diminished Value Actually Is

When a vehicle is repaired after an accident, its repair history becomes a permanent part of its record. CARFAX captures it. AutoCheck captures it. Buyers see it. Even a vehicle that looks and drives identically to an undamaged comparable will consistently sell for less — because buyers discount it to offset perceived risk, or walk away entirely.

That difference in resale value is inherent diminished value (IDV). It's not theoretical. It's real, measurable, and in Indiana, it's recoverable from an at-fault driver's insurance company.

What It Isn't

Diminished value is not the cost of repairs. It's not your deductible. It's a separate, additional loss that exists on top of whatever repair costs were covered — and it's something most adjusters will never bring up on their own.

How It's Calculated

A credible DV appraisal looks at the vehicle's pre-loss ACV, the severity and location of the damage, repair quality, age and mileage, and current market comparables in your region. Beware of insurers using the "17c formula" — a deeply flawed internal methodology that routinely produces figures of a few hundred dollars on losses worth several thousand. It's not recognized by courts.

Who Can Claim It in Indiana

Third-party claimants — people who were not at fault — have the strongest basis for a DV claim against the at-fault driver's insurer. If someone else caused your accident, their insurance owes you more than the repair bill. They owe you the full measure of your loss — and that includes the hit to your vehicle's market value.
